FAQ

Q. What is the difference between a psychologist, a social worker and a counsellor?

A. The term “counsellor” has become a very widely used role description. Anyone, even without adequate training, can call themselves a counsellor. Social Workers and Psychologists, however, must have completed extensive university studies and training. Registered Psychologists must meet and abide by the strict criteria and guidelines set by the relevant registration body in their state.  Mental Health Social Workers must meet strict requirements for current knowledge and expertise in mental health clinical practice. Both Psychologists and Social Workers will also go by the title “counsellor” or “Therapist”.

Q. Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

A. Yes and No. If you intend to claim a medi-care rebate on your counselling sessions, you must provide a GP referral upon your first session. If you are a full fee paying client you do not need a referral.

A. A usual session lasts between 50 minutes to one hour, unless otherwise arranged in advance.
