Q. What is the difference between a psychologist, a social worker and a counsellor?

A. The term “counsellor” has become a very widely used role description. Anyone, even without adequate training, can call themselves a counsellor. Social Workers and Psychologists, however, must have completed extensive university studies and training. A Social Worker with current accreditation with their National Association must achieve a strict standard of practice and must demonstrate a commitment to ongoing training and development. Registered Psychologists must meet and abide by the strict criteria and guidelines set by the relevant registration body in their state.  Mental Health Social Workers must meet strict requirements for current knowledge and expertise in mental health clinical practice. Both Psychologists and Social Workers will also go by the title “counsellor” or “Therapist”.

Q. Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

A. Yes and No. If you intend to claim a medi-care rebate on your counselling sessions, you must provide a GP referral prior to or upon your first session. If you are a full fee paying client you do not need a referral.

Q. How do I go about making an appointment?

A. You can make an appointment via email or phone. Simply contact Life Enrichment Centre on the contact number provided on this website, or write a quick email using the contact form below
Payment must be made at the time of the appointment. Eftpos is available.

Q. How long does a session last?

A. A usual session lasts between 50 minutes to one hour, unless otherwise arranged in advance. For relationship counselling, it is recommended that each partner is seen individually for at least a single session prior to a joint session. Booking a double session (2 hours) is recommended for your first joint session.

Q. What kind of treatment strategies does Life Enrichment Centre use?

A. LEC uses a wide range of evidence-based treatments which have been found to be highly effective in clinical research. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psycho-education, Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Interpersonal Therapy.

Q. How often will I need to come?

A. Depending on the issues being addressed, generally appointments are made on a weekly or fortnightly basis to begin with, to facilitate best possible outcomes. This may vary depending on the issue and time frames.
